I can say without fail that 2010 has been the most bizarre year of my life. But along the road there are a few things I wouldn’t have been able to get through it without.
- Lady Gaga Overload - As she is to all other Little Monsters, Gaga is that daily reminder to be creative, free, and ultimately yourself. She also paid perfect tribute to the loss of the great (and my favourite) fashion designer Alexander McQueen at the Brit awards. In 2010 she brought us all together and I know she will continue in 2011.
- My Road to Recovery - This has been a challenging year for me, and I have finally started dealing with my demons. I spent two months in hospital working on my mental health issues. While there, I made some lifelong friends, and even though I may never see some again, I will never forget them. A tight-knit group formed, and several weeks after our program ended, we found out one of them had taken his life. He was such a sweet gentle soul who deserved happiness. It reminds me constantly to take life one day at a time, and as Dan Savage says, “It gets better”.
- My Family - My family who came together without fail in times of trouble. This November I lost my first grandparent, my mom’s father. His name was Alan, but we called him Poppa. Death is a bizarre experience and it seemed to be a theme this year in my life. We won’t ever forget you Poppa, and will always love you.
- My Friends - I would be nowhere without my friends who have supported me despite all my shortcomings, and have encouraged me in my recovery. I am so thankful to have friends who understand me, and love me without question. Honourable mentions are Julien, Jesse, Vicky, Melissa, Monique, Joy, Krystal and all my friends at the hospital. I wish you all the best in the new year.
Here’s to 2011!
